On January 21, 2018, the closing ceremony of the 2017 Guangdong coral reef survey was held in Guangzhou. The 2017 Guangdong coral reef survey was coordinated by Guangdong Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries and organized by the Shenzhen Institute of Guangdong Ocean University. Director-General of the Guangdong Provincial Coral Reef Survey and Director of the Institute's Coral Conservation Center Liao Baolin announced the results of the 2017 Guangdong coral reef survey at the closing ceremony.

The data from the 2017 Coral Reef Survey show that the coral reef ecosystem along the coast of our province is still relatively fragile, and the coral reef area remains low in biodiversity. There are few fish and invertebrates in the reef area, and the coral reef area still faces greater environmental pressure. Liao Baolin said that in the census, there were many fishing nets in coral reef areas, and there was coral bleaching in some areas, but there was no evidence that coral predators and large areas of coral bleached or died.
